QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q. Why do I need protein?

Protein, and only protein, provides your body with the amino acids it needs to repair and rebuild muscles. Protein also provides the necessary components to keep your immune system healthy, make hormones, enzymes, skin, hair, nails, organs and blood. The body can make carbohydrates from protein, but it cannot make protein from carbohydrates.
(Note the word protein comes from the Greek word "proteios" meaning of prime or of first importance.)

Q. What are APTTM - Full Spectrum Whey Peptides?

A complete spectrum of very low, low, medium and high molecular weight whey peptides. These peptides make up the major and minor fractions of specially prepared whey protein.

  1. Beta-Lactoglobulin (~53%) is the largest protein fraction of whey and rich in branched chain amino acids, necessary to fuel muscle growth.
  2. Alpha-Lactalbumin (~16%) is a low molecular weight peptide that is easily digested allowing faster absorption and uptake into muscles.
  3. Glycomacropeptides (~14%) stimulate the release of CCK, a hormone that signals the brain "you're full"; possibly helping to reduce your appetite.
  4. Immunoglobulins (~5%), as the name implies, may help to bolster the immune system.
  5. Bovine Serum Albumin peptides (~3.5%) are rich in the precursors necessary for the production of glutathione - the body's most important antioxidant. Research has shown whey protein increases glutathione levels in the body.
  6. Lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase and lysozyme (~3.5%) have antimicrobial properties.

Q. What is Active Peptide TransportTM?

Active Peptide TransportTM--Designer Whey's new patent pending formula is a breakthrough in whey protein-peptide delivery. Active Peptide Transport describes a new formulation that results in absorption of whey peptides in a faster, more efficient manner.

Fast protein absorption is important if you want to maximize your anabolic potential since significant scientific research has demonstrated that the faster a protein source is absorbed, the
more protein synthesis is stimulated. (Resulting in faster muscle growth!)

Active Peptide Transport was designed to do just this: provide faster and better protein-peptide absorption to stimulate protein synthesis and muscle growth.

Q. Does Designer WheyTM contain aspartame?

No, as of 3/1/99 no flavors contain aspartame.

Q. What are the sweeteners used?

Acesulfame K, a non-nutritive sweetener, is used in Strawberry, Chocolate, and Vanilla Praline. Acesulfame K passes through the body without being broken down. That is, it is not metabolized by the body, which means that acesulfame K is nutritionally inert. Acesulfame K is the most widely approved and used sweetener in the world.

Q. What are glycomacropeptides?

Glycomacropeptides are low molecular weight peptides found in specially processed whey proteins. These peptides have been shown in research to exert numerous health benefits, including appetite suppression. Research shows that glycomacropeptides stimulate the release of CCK (cholecystokinin), a hormone that signals the brain "you're full".

Q. Why should I mix protein into a drink and consume it immediately?

Immediately does not mean instantly. However, drinking within 30 minutes of mixing is smart as pure protein in the liquid form is an extremely fertile environment for airborne bacteria growth. Leaving a protein drink (reconstituted from powder) in a refrigerator for two hours is probably okay, but not overnight.

Q. What happens to the protein if I bake it? Freeze it? Blend it?

Any extreme temperatures, freezing or high heat (above ~140ºF), can denature protein (produce cross-linking) and reduce its solubility, digestibility and bioavailability.

Blending a protein solution (heat and foaming) can result in the denaturation of proteins, leading to a loss of solubility and biological functionality. However, the small amount of heat or foaming produced during preparation of a shake from a powder by blending in a household blender will not cause any damage to the proteins.

Q. What is whey?

Whey is a by-product of the cheese making process. It is the soluble protein fraction after the precipitation of the insoluble protein (casein) fraction.

Q. Is milk the same as whey?

No, milk contains 80% casein protein and 20% whey protein.

Q. Is Designer WheyTM lactose free?

Designer Whey
TM is 98% lactose free and, at recommended levels, suitable for most anyone with lactose intolerances.

Q. Can diabetics use Designer WheyTM?

Yes, but please see a physician first. Ask the doctor to review the ingredients and the supplement facts on the Designer Whey label.

Q. What if I am pregnant?

Yes. The above warning applies.

Q. Will a protein powder give me big muscles?

In order to achieve muscle growth while using protein powders you must "weight train" on a regular basis. A recommended workout for obtaining greater muscle definition is to exersise or train 3-4 days a week, rest prudently, avoid overtraining, and eat right. If you stick to this program, you may see results in as short a period of time as six weeks. Continuing this regimine for 48 weeks a year, for at least 3 or 4 years, will provide you the opportunity to attain the "big muscles" or improved muscular definition you are looking for.

Q. If I consume Designer Whey every day, how soon can I expect to see results?

This will depend upon genetics, technique and your level of motivation and dedication. In addition to providing your body with high-quality protein like Designer Whey, you
must participate in a systematic weight-training program on a regular basis. This is not to say you must work out if you use Designer Whey. Designer Whey is still a tasty and convenient protein supplement to add to your healthy diet, whether or not you exercise.

Q. Won't protein give me energy and keep me up all night?

Protein provides calories (4 cals/gram). Calories are energy. So the simple answer is YES, protein gives you energy. But the "energy" boost should not be confused with the mental-alertness type of effect obtained with caffeine found in cola, coffee, tea, etc.

However, research has demonstrated that protein may enhance cognitive function and concentration in mental type tasks ;better than carbohydrates which actually make you sleepy. So if you have the afternoon "blahs", need to work or study late at night, or feel slightly fatigued mentally or physically, enjoy a pure protein shake with minimal carbohydrates.

Q. How much protein do I need on a daily basis?

Several factors play critical roles in how much protein your body needs. Age, metabolic rate, exercise level, stress factors, your amount of sleep, and the quality and quantity of foods you eat, all play a role in determining your protein requirements. Extensive research into human metabolic rates and how they are affected by age, activity and stress have been prepared over the last decade by leading physicians in hospital settings. See the table below for estimates of your protein requirements based on your personal lifestyle/training goals.
